If you are going camping in a forest in North America, chances are you’ll be in “bear country”, where bears frequent campsites and rummage through tents. This download + print unit study is a companion to our Black Bear and Spirit Bear Nature Study and provides learning opportunities on how to keep you, your family, and the bears safe when you’re camping.

This download + print unit study was created to raise awareness about the safety and conflicts involved with living, hiking, biking, and camping around bears. A portion of the sales from both this set and the stacking bears set will be donated to the Get Bear Smart Society in Whistler, British Columbia as well as the Spirit Bear Research Foundation in the Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia.
In this study you'll discover the difference between "bare" (aka empty) camping and bear camping (aka leaving your camping with bear attractants). Like everything else we make, this activity set is open-ended and can be adapted for many age and skill groups.
What's included:
  • an explanation of a bare campsite and why black bears frequent campsites regularly
  • a list of bear attractants
  • two activity recommendations
  • a printable Venn Diagram for sorting
  • a printable campsite painting
  • a printable set of camping items
All of the artwork was done by a mom and her 12-year-old daughter. Supporting this study not only supports the future of black and spirit bears, but it also supports a young girl's dream of being a full time artist one day.
This is a companion to our Black Bear and Spirit Bear Nature Study
