Sorting and Play Dough Tray

One of the greatest delights in little kids is to organize items in their world. This flower-shaped wooden tray is a staple for any family with little ones, as its versatility will make it one of the most-used items in your play room.

The beauty of sorting is that once a child understands the basics of it, he or she will want to sort everything. That means this tray can go with you anywhere your child does because there is a whole big world out there to sort. Bring it to the restaurant and sort the items on the table (creamers, salt packets, sugar packets) or take it to the beach and sort rocks and shells by colour, by shape, by size. Take it on a forest walk and sort the types of mosses, or pine cones, or sticks.

The idea is simple: put several items in the middle and then let your little one organize them in the six outer circles in whatever grouping he or she sees fit. Half the fun is watching them come up with a system to group. Will it be by colour? Size? Shape? Texture? However they choose to sort, know that they are developing several key skills: focus and concentration; hand and eye coordination; language as they name and identify commonalities and differences; and early math through classification.

At home, the tray is an ideal companion to the Rainbow Small Balls and Bowls.

It is also perfect for Waldorf watercolour painting, as it fits six jars, which represents the six colours of the rainbow. The petals will easily fit the 125mL Bernardin jars.

The tray also doubles for invitations to play or invitations to create. Add a large ball of homemade play dough to the middle and distribute open-ended items like the trees and rings in our shop, or rocks, leaves, glitter - whatever you have in your home.

THE DETAILS

The flower tray is made from one piece of pure Canadian maple wood. It is not made from pieces laminated together, nor is it made from wood overseas. The wood is sourced locally and sustainably. It is rare, but in the example pictured there is a natural fissure in the wood. This is part of what makes each piece unique.

The tray measures 11.5" in diameter and is 1 inch thick.

It is finished with a vegan wax and oil finish.
