Description
What better way to ignite the imagination and foster knowledge than through creative play? Our wooden orca (killer whale) is made from both walnut and maple to capture the true patterns of this iconic apex predator of the ocean. Pair it with silks, a sensory tray, or a Pacific Northwest Nature Study by my friend Blaire at thesereveries.com.
Fun orca facts shared by my friends who are marine biologists and participating in the Ocean Wise work with orcas around Vancouver, British Columbia:
- There are several types of orcas, some who live in our Salish Sea year round, and some who just migrate through the area in the summer.
- The famous southern resident orca mama, Tahlequah (J35) carried her dead calf with her for 17 days while all of our mama hearts ached for her loss.
- Orcas aren’t actually whales; they are biologically dolphins.
- Orcas are the apex predator, which means nothing eats them. GPS tracking has shown that when an orca enters an area of a great white shark, the great white will dive deep, never to return to the area.
The orca measures 6 inches in length and is 3/4 inch thick, making it a sizable and formidable foe of the sea.
As with all our toys, this item is handmade, and is finished in nontoxic, certified safe oil and wax.
