Name Puzzle

Our names are the first things that we own, the first things that are ours - to learn how to say, write and share. They help us claim ownership and pride in our work, and help shape our identities. The name puzzle helps little ones begin to recognize the combination of shapes that form their name, through tactile and kinesthetic means.

The name puzzle is the first in a growing sequence of skills that will help your child recognize and ultimately, produce his or her name. At a young age, your child will look at the shapes of his or her name as just that - shapes. Through practice and curiosity, your child will figure out where the "a" in his or name goes, or where the "big letter" goes. Being able to feel the curves and lines of each letter as she or he handles them and works on the position of where the letter goes in the puzzle spot, will ignite neuropathways in the brain and create a deep and meaningful connection.

In short, the name puzzle will help your child learn the letter sequence and shapes of his or her name. Combine it with our name tracing board at the preschool/pre-k age for more creative exploration and connections.

THE LETTERS

The shapes of the letters have been researched and are the most commonly taught versions in Preschool, Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms, with the "true lowercase a", the proper-shaped lowercase "j" (with a hook like an umbrella handle on the end), the lowercase "k" that connects mid-point to create a more fluid motion when writing, and a lowercase "q" with an upper stroke at 45 degrees from the bottom. They are not a fancy font, nor narrow to save space, nor are they modern with straight "j"s.

Note: If you would like to add the mountain and tree to your name puzzle, please add an additional 2 "letters" to your purchase. For example, if your child is named "Ava" you would purchase a 5-letter puzzle, then add that you want the mountain and tree in the note with the child's name at checkout.

LOOKING FOR AN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS VERSION?

To keep the learning interest of your child first and foremost, we do not offer an all-capital-letters version.

As a wonderful Kindergarten teacher once pointed out to me, in this sentence there are 2 capital letters and 88 lowercase letters. Would you rather be the kid who knows 2 letters or 88? We think you want to be the one who recognizes 88 letters; that's why we only capitalize the first letter of the child's name. (Help spread the word! Lowercase letters are more important to start learning than capital letters.)

Please note that because wood is a natural material with different grains, your puzzle will most likely look different from the one pictured. We do our best to make each one similar but the beauty of nature is that it is wonderfully unique.

THE PUZZLE

The board is made from 100% pure, locally sourced Canadian maple. The length of the board varies, depending on the number of letters in the name, and the board is 3/4" thick. The letters are from locally sourced walnut. Each letter measures approximately 2 inches in height (depending on its shape) and is 3/4" thick, making for a strong tactile experience.

CLEANING

If you're going to fill in the grooves, we recommend using only dry sensory materials with this puzzle like rainbow rice. The finish is resistant to mild liquid, but is not meant for intense dunking. Spot clean with a damp cloth and let air dry. Markers and crayons are not recommended.

A note about wooden toys: Wood is a natural material and as such, has various unique markings. Variations in wood grain, colour, knots, or texture are all natural occurrences in these hand-crafted wooden products. These unique variations and markings are proof of quality, not defects. Enjoy the variations in the grain that make your toy unique and an heirloom piece.

There may be a difference in colour between what you see on your screen and what you receive in real life. This is due to different monitors and displays, and while we wish there was just one universal monitor for everyone, that isn't the case.

USA: Basic shipping is untracked air. If you would like your package to be tracked please select a different shipping option when you check out. PLEASE include your phone number in a note when you make your purchase; our customs form requires it and not including it may delay shipping to you.

Europe, Australia and around the world: Basic shipping is untracked surface and CAN TAKE UP TO 8 WEEKS (which is why it is so affordable). If you would like to receive your package sooner please select AIR when you check out. If you would like tracking on your package please choose that option. Regardless of the method you choose, PLEASE include your phone number in a note when you make your purchase; our customs form requires it and not including it may delay shipping to you.
