An engaging sugar-free alternative to mini chocolate eggs, this hand painted wooden mini egg and bowl set makes a great gift for Easter.

Hide the eggs around the house for a fun sugar-free hunt, or take it outdoors and observe the contrast of the pastel colours to the chocolate-coloured earth in the garden.

Match the eggs to their bowls and strengthen the pincer grasp (important for holding a pencil) with the provided tweezers. If you have the mini rainbow balls, you can put all the balls and eggs in a tray, on a table, on the rug, or on a work space mat and practice shape sorting between balls and eggs. Preschoolers will love chasing the mini balls on a flat surface with the tweezers (they really roll!) and observing the difference between the eggs and the balls: which is easier to pick up? Why do you think that is? Is there something about the ovoid shape that helps to make it easier to "catch" with the tweezers?

Preschoolers will delight in setting up a tea party with the pretty spring-coloured bowls (and you can use the cups from the Peek-a-Boo Rainbow Acorns Set as pretend drinking cups) and then serving the treat-like mini eggs to all their "guests" - or just to you.

Put a science spin on it by identifying which eggs are robin's eggs and then discussing how they become blue (from biliverdin, a pigment deposited on the eggshell when the female lays the eggs). Share that male robins will care more for their babies if the eggs that the mama robin lays are very bright blue. Wonder if robins are the only birds that lay blue eggs (They aren't). Then explore egg colours and go for a robin hunt.

Dive into imaginative world-building by using a straw basket or raffia (wood excelsior included in shipping) as a nest and then creating a story of how the eggs came to be in the nest. Who put the eggs there? Are they dinosaur eggs?

For preschoolers and elementary-aged children, get those brain neurons firing by putting the eggs and bowls in a sensory bin with some scoops and the tongs. You can keep it open-ended by burying them in dry sand, or theme it to Easter by using (dry) green rice and adding bunnies or chicks.

Use them in our ten frame (with the numbers from our wooden puzzle) for some seasonal counting or math activities.

The possibilities are endless.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This set comes with 12 mini eggs that have been coloured in groups of 2 for 6 pastel colours: pink, light orange, light yellow, mint, baby blue, and lilac. Each egg is 7/8 inches in diameter at the base, and 1 1/4" long. They are larger than an average marble but smaller than a ping pong ball. Think: a touch bigger than a red grape.

The bowls are 2.5" wide by 1 & 1/16" high. They are roughly larger than your soya sauce dipping bowl when you go out for sushi, though that depends on what kind of sushi you eat. I once was given a bowl that was almost a small cereal bowl; they're definitely smaller than a cereal bowl.

The wooden tweezers are also included. The stuffed bunny, the straw basket, the sensory bin, the ten frame and the wooden tray are NOT included in this set but are in the photos to inspire play options.

The balls and bowls have been hand painted in an award-winning environmentally conscientious paint that is certified safe for use on wooden toys. As a result of the water-based paint, the wood can rise and feel rough in areas. This offers a true sense of wood to the child and helps him or her connect with the natural aspect. While we strongly encourage imaginative play the bowls are not food safe. Everything has been lightly sealed with our blend of organic beeswax and organic oils. Spot clean only and then reseal with a natural sealant.
