They're so simple yet offer so much to your little one. The egg and cup, ball and bowl, and cube in box can be introduced when your young one is sitting on his or her own, at approximately 8 to 9 months. Show him how each item fits into its container, and then step away to let him explore.
What's he learning?
Tons.
He'll practice his whole-hand grasping of objects, strengthening those key tendons and muscles for holding a pencil in a few years down the road.
He'll work on developing spatial perception and cognition, exercising his mind by problem solving which item goes into which container.
And he'll learn the difference in shapes between an egg, sphere and cube. (Early geometry!)
Introduce just one set at the time. Start with the ball and bowl, then work to the egg and cup and finally the cube and box. The cube is more challenging than it looks because it has many sides, which require alignment with the box in order to be placed inside it.
Later on, use all of them for imaginative play. The egg, ball and cube can be used for pretend food (the ball could be a giant meatball, the cube a chunk of cheese or a cube of butter). Perhaps the box is a mouse's house or box for an important figurine to stand on during an opera performance. Perhaps the cup is a dew collector for fairies each morning.
At the preschool age, use them for geometric shape identification: sphere, ovoid, and cube.
The possibilities are limitless.
