What better way to teach the "if you get knocked down, just get back up again" theme than to physically knock down some pins, then pick them up again. Children as young as 8 months (or whenever they are sitting) will delight in the satisfying pleasure of rolling a ball so it can crash into the brightly coloured pins.

THE SKILLS

Can a bowling set teach physics and math?

You bet it can.

Start little ones with an achievable task and line the pins in a row close to one another so that the two-inch ball will strike one on every roll. Reinforce colour recognition by saying the colour of the pin that falls over: "The ball hit the red pin". The clatter of the pins is great auditory stimulation and cinches that first exposure to the theory of causality in physics (the theory of cause and effect). Both the textured grain in the wood and the sound of the ball hitting the pins make this an ideal sensory activity for littles or for those who do best in sensory play.

Toddlers and preschoolers can further their colour identification and gross motor skills by setting the pins in a triangle (or row, if it is preferred) and calling out the colour they are aiming for, before they roll the ball. (Or you can challenge them by choosing the colour and asking them to hit the blue pin, for example.)

Kindergarteners and primary grades can assign numerical value to each colour and work on counting and adding points. (For example, red can be worth 5 points if it is at the front but perhaps purple is far at the back and more difficult to knock over so it may be worth 20 points.)

Tweens, teens, and older can employ the typical bowling rules in this miniature version of the real game.

The best part is that it is small enough to be portable for camping trips, road trips, or even something to do while waiting at the airport - yet the pins are large enough to act as an engaging activity.

USE IT IN MORE THAN ONE WAY

Pair the pins with the wooden bow and arrow set (launching January 2019, sneak peak available on our Instagram account @modernimaginationco) and put the pins on a table, chair, or along a fence, and aim the arrows at them. This combination activity was an absolute hit at our last winter market, and we had a steady lineup the whole day as kids as young as 2 waited for their turn to shoot the arrows at the pins. Few things are more satisfying to kids as the chance to be allowed to knock something over - especially when fast motion is involved.

THE DETAILS

We aim to be as environmentally conscientious as possible. The paint used is certified safe for use on toys, and is made with care and consideration of the environment, humans, and animals. It contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) like formaldehyde or toluene and is not harmful to the planet.

The pins are 5 inches tall, making this a miniature set and not a full-sized set. The ball is 2 inches in diameter.
